FAQ
Questions and answers
What merchants ask before they install – from the flow to cancelling.
What is Skonto?
Skonto is a discount for paying early, common between businesses in German-speaking countries – for example: pay within 7 days and deduct 2%. Buyers who pay later owe the full amount by the final deadline.
Does the order total change?
Not at first: the order is placed at the full amount. Only when you confirm that the payment arrived in time is the same order reduced by the Skonto and marked as paid – no second order is created.
The basis is the final order total including shipping and taxes. An order keeps the terms it was placed with; if you change the percentage or the periods later, that applies to new orders only.
What happens when my customer pays late?
After the Skonto deadline the Skonto expires and the full amount is payable by the final deadline. The app checks the deadlines once a day and sets the order’s status: active, Skonto expired, overdue. Your customer sees the current state on the order status page.
What counts is when the money arrived in your account (value date), not when you confirm it: a payment that arrived before the deadline can still be confirmed with Skonto afterwards. If a customer transfers the reduced amount after the deadline, the remainder stays outstanding.
Is Skonto Pay for B2B only, or for consumers too?
B2B is the default: only buyers purchasing for a B2B company see the Skonto payment method. You can allow all companies or enable selected ones.
If you choose, Skonto is also offered to logged-in customers or to everyone, including guests. That carries a risk: an order with a manual payment method is created unpaid but reserves stock right away. So you acknowledge the risk explicitly and can set limits – a cap on unpaid Skonto orders per customer (for logged-in customers; guests cannot be counted), automatic cancellation of unpaid consumer orders after a number of days, and a minimum and maximum order total. B2B orders are never cancelled automatically.
Do I need Shopify Plus?
Not for everything. The block below the payment methods in checkout is a checkout UI extension and needs checkout extensibility on Shopify Plus. The blocks on the thank-you page and the order status page work on all Shopify plans.
How do I confirm a payment?
On the order in the Shopify admin: in the “Skonto” block click “Confirm payment received”, enter the amount received and the date shown on the bank statement, tick that you checked the bank account, and finish with “Apply Skonto and record payment”. If the payment arrived within the Skonto period, the order is reduced and marked as paid.
If the full amount arrived, the payment is recorded without Skonto. If the amount matches neither the amount with Skonto nor the full amount, the app changes nothing and shows you the difference.
How is VAT handled?
The Skonto is calculated on the final order total including shipping and taxes. On confirmation the app reduces the order itself – to the cent, VAT included.
What counts towards my plan’s monthly limit?
Every new Skonto order, that is every order placed with the Skonto payment method in the current calendar month. The month follows your shop’s time zone.
When the limit is reached, the Skonto payment method is hidden in checkout – until the next month or until you upgrade. Existing Skonto orders are not affected.
What does Skonto Pay cost?
Free costs nothing and includes 15 Skonto orders per month. Growth is $19 per month for 300 Skonto orders, Pro $49 per month for unlimited orders – with priority support and help with the setup. Growth and Pro come with a 14-day free trial. All plans include B2B and D2C. See Pricing.
How do I change or cancel my plan?
You change the plan on the “Plan” page in the app – including back to Free. Billing runs through Shopify. When you uninstall the app, Shopify cancels the subscription.
On uninstall, the access token and the app’s list of your Skonto orders are deleted at once; 48 hours later all remaining data of your shop follows. More in the privacy policy.
Which languages does Skonto Pay support?
English and German. Checkout, the thank-you page and the order status page follow the buyer’s language, otherwise the shop’s; the app in the admin follows the language of your Shopify admin. Amounts and dates are formatted to match the language. For the order confirmation snippet you choose the language during setup.
Which data does the app store?
For each Skonto order the app stores the order ID and number, the Skonto status, the two deadlines and the customer’s Shopify ID – no names, emails or addresses. Name, company and order contents are only read from Shopify and shown. Server and database are in Frankfurt. The details are in the privacy policy.
